With a PhD in organometallic chemistry, lecturer and subsequently senior lecturer and reader at the University of Leeds, UK, Terry has also had several visiting professorships (Universite´ de Cergy-Pontoise and CNRS Centre Biophysique Mole´culaire). He also holds affiliate faculty membership in the Dept of Astronomy, University of Florida, USA. An STFC-UKSA Aurora Fellow in Astrobiology, he has also been president of the Astrobiology Society of Britain (ASB), receiving their Research Award in 2008 and has also authored or co-authored many published journal articles, book chapters and reviews.

The prime aim and objectives of the 'Network of Researchers on the Chemical Evolution of Life' are to promote and disseminate research information relating to the chemical evolution of life on the Earth, from the advent of prebiotic chemistry through to the emergence of the cellular life forms, namely Archaea, Bacteria and Eukarya.
