In 2013, Dr Sohan Jheeta, an independent research scientist and free thinker instigated the initial concept behind the Network and, with the support of Reader Martin Dominik (University of St Andrews), currently the President of the Network, as well as Professor Nigel Mason (University of Kent), the framework for the embryonic network was formulated. Chief Executive Officer, Professor Elias Chatzitheodoridis (National Technical University of Athens), then joined the Network in 2016.The first conference was held at The Open University in Milton Keynes, UK with subsequent conferences scheduled for every two years.
